In 2004, Texas A&M University developed a unique Campus Master Plan. Consulting on the project were Barnes, Gromatsky, Kosarek Architects, with Michael Dennis & Associates; Dr. Bryce Jordan, Sasaki Associates; and Paulien & Associates, who worked closely with the university’s Campus Plan Steering Committee, directed by Charles Sippial, vice president of Texas A&M. The planning involved Texas A&M administrators, faculty, staff, students, and former students. Endorsed by the Texas A&M University System Board of Regents, the plan has since garnered awards for its quality and comprehensiveness from both the Texas Society of Architects and Boston Society of Architects.
Design guidelines are a critical component of the Campus Master Plan. They
help architects to design new buildings that reflect the traditions and context
of Texas A&M University. In conjunction with the design guidelines, the
Campus Master Plan established a Design Review Board (DRB) and a campus planner
position. Together, they ensure that the quality standards specified in the
Campus Master Plan are followed in order to maintain and improve the quality
of the campus environment. Robert M. Gates, Texas A&M president, appointed
J. Thomas Regan, dean of the College of Architecture, to the new campus planner
post. As campus planner, Regan chairs the DRB; Doug Palmer, dean of the College
of Education & Human Development
and
chair of the Council on the Built Environment serves as the DRB vice chair.
The DRB is composed of faculty members with expertise in architecture, landscape
architecture, planning, construction, and engineering; practicing professionals;
a student; and ex-officio members from the TAMU System’s Facilities Planning
and Construction department and the Texas A&M Office of the Vice President
for Facilities.
